Journal Entry Reflection Entry #1 – First Newspapers

Compared to today, what are some of the obvious differences between these historical newspapers and today’s modern newspapers or reading news online?

Some obvious differences between the newspapers today and historical newspapers, are in the new newspapers there is colour, pictures, different categories like sports, obituaries, birthdays, etc. News papers back then was just news as to what was happening in the world, community, city, ect.

Publick Occurrences was forced to shut down because they were critical of the government. Do you think the government should have that kind of control or power today? Explain your position.

I do not think the government should have the authority to shut down newspapers, because even though the government may think that things like that shouldn't be accessible for the public, a lot of people may want to.

Many newspapers today can be critical of the government, businesses, etc. but still continue to publish. Why do you think that is? What do you think prevents the government from closing down newspapers or other media organizations?

I think the government still continues to publish because the government wants the public to know about news around the world, even if newspapers are critical to the government. I think the public prevents the government from shutting down the media and newspapers organization because even if the government did shit down the organization they would still find a way to let the public know.

Were you surprised to learn that the first newspaper in Canada was in Halifax? If so where did you think it would be? Why?

I was very surprised to learn the first newspaper in Canada was in Halifax because Halifax is so close to us. I thought that the first newspaper would have been somewhere in Quebec because they seem to be more advanced in the world than Halifax.
